Whenever people talk about business, they will inevitably mention networking. There are business networking events all throughout the country, which can be quite daunting for a small business. Sometimes they feel important; other times, it may feel like they are a waste of time. So what's the truth about business networking?

A quick disclaimer: everything in this blog post is going to be based on my personal experience, which may be helpful to you, but it also might mean that you experience something completely different. I will share with you everything I have learnt in the past ten years to hopefully fast-track you in your business success.

What is networking in business?

First, it helps to remind ourselves of the definition of networking. It's the act of interacting and building relationships with others (usually in the same industry). Networking is all about relationships, and in business, that's priceless.

When you think of networking, it's usually business-to-business, which might not be so valuable to you. But networking can also mean building relationships with customers - at least in my opinion.

How to Start Networking

When I first looked into networking, I looked for business events. These are filled with businesses, speakers and attendees. But very quickly, I found that this wasn't an event that would benefit my business. This may benefit someone who is looking for certain business solutions, or for those looking to grow their contact list. In all honesty, it was overwhelming.

Over the years, I have found that for small businesses, especially those who operate locally, it can be more beneficial to look for events that are more like markets. A place to showcase your work, meet other businesses and attract customers. It may not seem like networking, but it is.

The only difference between a locally held artisan market and a business networking event is the vendors. If a civilian attends a business networking event, they are unlikely to find anything of interest. Similarly, if a business owner is looking for solutions, they are unlikely to find them at a local artisan market.

It all starts with knowing what you want to achieve from networking. Is it to scout out the competition? Is it to find suppliers? Is it to build business relationships? Is it to attract customers? These sorts of questions will help you decide what kind of networking event you want to attend.

When you start going to networking events, look for the ones that are free to attend. That will help you get a feeling for things with little to no pressure. You don't have to do anything to start with, apart from a little market research as such. See what it's like and where you currently fit in an event like that.

One tip: have your business card. You never know who you might meet, and it's worth having your contact details in case you meet the right people.

The Importance of Networking

Ultimately, a business is all about relationships, whether it's suppliers or customers. In an increasingly digital world, human connection is more important than ever. The more people you know, the more opportunities you have. That's the importance of networking. To build your contacts and therefore your opportunities.

It's not easy to run a business, especially by yourself, and knowing certain people can lead to game-changing results. That being said, networking is also unpredictable. Think of it as making friends. You aren't going to be friends with everybody, but there are some friendships that will last a lifetime.
